Mubarak faces 15 days detention, suffers heart attack

Thousands of protesters had assembled in front of the hospital in Sharm el-Sheikh where Egypt’s past president Hosni Mubarak is currently admitted.

Sharm el-Sheikh, one of the hot spots of tourism in Egypt has now become Mubarak’s safety abode. Right after his surrender, Mubarak flew down to a resort here, protecting his safety.

But then, his doomsday is still not over. Or perhaps, it has not even started.

Hosni Mubarak is suffering from heart attack. BBC reports that he is in ‘unstable condition’.

In a recent development, Hosni Mubarak, along with his two sons, Alaa and Gamal has been detained for 15 days, under the charges of corruption, abuse of state power and killing of 360 people during the 18 day revolt in February.

In his first public appearance after flying to a red sea resort in Sharm el-Sheikh, following his surrender, Mubarak openly stated that the charges of corruption was ‘a lie’.

Few of his exact words were “I will uphold all my legal rights to defend my reputation as well as that of my family.”

He also mentioned that he is pained because of the damage done to his reputation and he would uphold all legal rights to protect his image.

Though, Abdel Maguid Mahmoud, the public prosecutor has said in response that Mubarak’s attack over the accusations would not affect the investigation.

Protest continues at Tahrir Square

Even after the surrender of Mubarak, tens of thousands of protesters used to assemble at the Tahrir Sqaure, especially every Friday, to revolt against the rule of military council.

There were rumours that Mubarak’s son Gamal, who has been quite infamous amongst the Egyptians, was being trained to be the next dictator.

This had caused visible unrest among the Egyptians, further distancing the army and the natives in their goals of democracy and political establishment.

Now, the protests have also gained momentum against the boycott of Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, who is the current head of the military council.

The Army which was supposedly thought to be ‘with’ the protesters is now showing different colours.

Currently, the parliamentary elections would take place in Egypt in September.

In the meanwhile, the family assets of Mubarak have been frozen. He and his family members are not allowed to travel outside the country.

It has been decided that on 19th April, Mubarak along with his sons would be questioned in the Cairo court.

Egyptians welcome Mubarak’s detention

The response of Egyptians over the ‘15 day’ detention of the deposed leader Mubarak is very positive.

Mohamed AbdelWaheb stated that the detention is justice because it would be better for the legal investigations to reveal the truth.

Ahmed Naguib, a political science undergraduate Egyptian student tweeted that the detention was justice, as of now.

While Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian law scholar and diplomat, has recently tweeted that ‘Efforts to abort revolution continue unabated. Obvious measures need to be taken immediately to sustain credibility.’
